This is also not the computer programming of the 80’s where you need to write a TON of code to get anything remotely interesting to happen on your screen. All you need is a little aptitude, some time and the motivation to learn and keep going. If you’re really interested and take the time to learn the basics, you’ll find it’s much easier than you thought it would be. However, I feel that same way about Italian or French and yet, many people who are less smart than you are have conquered those languages and that is arguably more difficult. When you first look at code, it might look like someone barfed a bunch of bits onto a screen and you want to back up slowly and not touch anything because everything might break if you sneeze. So much that I often throw my hands in the air and run around the house yelling “I’M A CODE WARRIOR!” But like, in a whisper because the baby is napping. The amount of satisfaction I get from typing a few words into my screen and seeing things magically come to life on my phone screen is off the charts. A few keystrokes can change the entire look and behavior of your app. Once you get started, it’s a very short amount of time before you start seeing the results of work that you do. Oh what, no one told you? This is a seriously well-kept secret, but if you’re the type of person who loves solving puzzles, consider assembling Ikea furniture a delightful afternoon and have most of your friends and family asking you to solve their computer problems, you’ll probably find coding your own app an immense amount of fun. I truly believe that many more mamas should be doing this! Here are some things that I learned along the way that might help you take the leap into the exciting world of coding… Learning to create a mobile app was a brand new challenge for me that turned out to be not as difficult as I initially expected. Back then the iPhone hadn’t even been invented yet, so mobile development didn’t even exist. I studied Computer Science back in university, but I hadn’t written code in a decade.

So in hopes to possibly springboard this into a business, I decided I was going to teach myself how to build apps. There had to be a halfway option that was going to work for me. However, just a few months into motherhood, I also realized that spending my entire day with my daughter, cooking, cleaning and having very little intellectual stimulation was going to make me go insane. Suddenly the 10-12 hour days that I used to spend at work seemed totally out of the question. Being a stay-at-home mom was never something that I aspired to be, but after having my daughter, I wanted nothing more than to stare at her sleeping face and smother her in love all day long.
